Series B, Week 28

Your Art Class Flies the Flag

Countries have distinctive flags. In 1776 the new country of the original thirteen colonies of the United States had a flag with 13 stripes of alternating red and white stripes and 13 stars on a blue background, representing the 13 original colonies. Folk lore says that Betsy Ross made the first flag. Now historians doubt that happened. However, the Continental Congress did adopt the flag design in 1777. Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, also designed a flag with 13 stars and stripes, only the stars were not in a circle. After Vermont and Kentucky joined the United States a new flag was designed with 15 stars and 15 stripes.  In 1818 a new flag was designed when Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi joined the United States. The flag went back to the thirteen stripes, but changed the stars to 20. After that stars were added with additional states. Your Art Class can enjoy the history of the flag.
