Your Art Class Flutters Orange in August

The August butterfly is the Gulf fritillary or orange passion butterfly. Its host plant is the passion vine and the 2.5” to 3” orange – brown female deposits eggs on the leaves of the plant. In 4 to 8 days the eggs hatch into very small caterpillars that spend 2 to 3 weeks eating the leaves of the passion vine. The caterpillar forms a chrysalis and takes 5 to 10 days to transform itself into a beautiful orange butterfly, the male is smaller. The beautiful orange fritillary butterfly lives for 2 to 4 weeks and has a chemical defense that discourages predators as it flutters around enjoying nectar. The August butterfly and August birthdays are survivors and enjoy life and passion!
