Your Art Class Knocks on Wood

The woodpecker is an unusual bird from the picicae family. There are many different types of woodpeckers but the one thing they have in common is their ability to repeatedly peck or hammer wood looking for insects to eat. Engineers have even studied woodpeckers in motion to determine how their skulls are not damaged by their continual hammering. The most notable of the woodpeckers is the largest, the pileated woodpecker with the large red cone on top and measuring 16 to 19 inches long. The famous cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker, is modeled after the pileated Woodpecker.
