Your Art Class Graduates

One of the most spectacular college graduations takes place every year under the Avenue of Oaks at Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. The oak trees create a natural promenade. At the end of the avenue is Greek Revival style building that the University bought from the owner in 1903. Springhill College was the first desegregated college in Alabama in 1954. On several occasions between 1955 and 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr. met or spoke with representatives of the college to discuss the civil rights movement. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. "The function of education is to teach one to think critically, intelligence plus characterthat is the goal of true education." A walk down the Avenue of Oaks is a walk to overcome.
